The Gene Messer Shootout wrapped up this weekend and one of our teams made it all the way to the championship game.
Estacado defeated Monterey and Palo Duro in the quarter and semi-final rounds on Friday to make it to the tournament championship against Rockwall Heath.
The Matadors were unable to top the Hawks, falling 90-51 but given how young the season is, it's a good time to learn from this loss going forward.
"It's good to play a good team like this early in the season," Estacado head coach Tony Wagner said. "Those are the type of teams you have to beat in a state championship. Our goals haven't changed. I still expect us to make it to San Antonio, I still expect us to play for a state championship.
"We need these kind of experiences so we can learn from them and know what to do and make the proper adjustments, so that when playoffs come we will be better."
